LIPOSUCTION
- POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
NORMAL
SYMPTOMS
q
Swelling
and bruising are normal following
liposuction.
It is not uncommon for a patient to
be larger immediately following surgery than
they were before, due to swelling. Swelling begins to subside within the first week following
surgery but changes will continue to be
noticeable for three to six months following
the procedure.
Swelling and bruising may occur and
subside asymmetrically.
Bruising may last for several weeks
following surgery.
This is all normal!
The
sensation of the skin may be altered.
The area may feel numb; there may be
tingling sensations; or, it may be
hypersensitive.
This normally subsides within three
to six months, but may last longer.
You
may feel irregularities under the skin.
This includes a “healing ridge”
or raised area directly under the incision
lines. This is normal and can be treated with ultrasound treatments
or massage.
The
scar may be quite apparent immediately
following surgery.
It takes scars up to one year or
longer to mature and fully heal.
Each
person heals differently.
If you have questions or concerns at
any time, please call our office.
SLEEPING
q
Rest
in a reclining position to relieve tension
from treated areas.
Elevate the legs on pillows to help
decrease swelling.
BATHING
q
You
may shower after the first 48 hours WITH
YOUR GARMENT IN PLACE.
Shower with your garment in place for
2 days. Use a blow dryer set on a low
setting to dry the garment on yourself after
showering.
The
only exception is if you have been fitted
with an abdominal binder.
You may remove the abdominal binder
for showering and refit it immediately
following your shower.
Avoid
tub baths for two weeks following surgery.
FOOD
q
Eat
foods that are high in iron such as spinach,
raisins, fish and leafy green vegetables.
ACTIVITY
q
You
are not a bed patient, but don’t overdo
it. Quiet
activities at home are best for the first
few days following surgery.
Jogging, aerobics, swimming and other
such activities should be avoided until your
doctor gives you permission.
q
Begin
gentle massage with a mild lotion two weeks
postoperatively.
Also, ultrasound treatments are
highly recommended to speed up the healing
process.
It is very beneficial and
therapeutic.
CLOSING
q
Wear
your garment both day and night for the
first few weeks after surgery.
The doctor will advise you when you
can stop wearing it.
DRIVING
q
Someone
should drive you to your first postoperative
appointment.
You can drive when you are no longer
taking prescription pain medication and your
doctor gives you permission.
