OTOPLASTY - POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

NORMAL SYMPTOMS

q      The postoperative dressing is a complete head wrap and a very important part of the surgery.  It should not be disturbed.  There may some bloody drainage on the dressing.  This is normal.  If is seems excessive or if the discomfort is not controlled by the medication. Please call the office for immediate attention.

q      The ears will be bruised and swollen following surgery. The majority of this resolves within the first two weeks; however, the swelling will continue to resolve and subtle changes will be noticed for up to six months following surgery.  Swelling and bruising can occur and subside asymmetrically.

q      Altered sensation or numbness is normal and generally subsides within six months after surgery.

SLEEPING

q      Sleep on your back with your head elevated on 2-3 pillows for several weeks after surgery.  This will help to reduce your swelling.

BATHING

q      You may bathe 48 hours after your surgery – do not get your head dressing wet!  A bathe is advised rather than a shower.  

q      You may wash your face, gently with warm water and a mild soap.  Carefully pat dry.  Do not get your head dressing wet!

q      You may wash your hair 24 hours after your sutures are removed.  Gently dry your ears thoroughly.

APPEARANCE

q      Leave all of your surgical dressings in place.  They will be removed one week following your surgery.  You may want to bring a scarf or hat to this appointment to cover your hair following the appointment.

q      Purchase a three-inch headband prior to surgery.  Your doctor will instruct you as to when you will wear your headband.  You will wear it continuously (24 hours a day) for a period of time and then be instructed to wear the band just at night.

q      Do not wear earrings for at least two weeks following surgery.

q      Do not wear glasses until your doctor gives you permission to do so.

ACTIVITY

q      Do not bend or do heavy lifting for at least one month after surgery.  You may resume light exercise 2 weeks after surgery, but vigorous activities should be avoided for at least 4 weeks.  Do not resume contact sports until your doctor gives you permission.

DRIVING

q      You may drive when you are no longer taking pain medication.
