PEELS -
POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
NORMAL
SYMPTOMS
q
A
burning sensation similar to severe sunburn
will begin soon after the medication is
applied (or after anesthesia wears off).
This feeling may last 24 to 72 hours.
q Slight
to moderate swelling will also occur.
q
Dermabrasion
patients may use cold compresses applied
directly to the tender area for the first 6
hours after surgery.
q
When
your scab is gone, the area will be bright
red.
You may apply moisturizer and makeup at
this time.
No moisturizers than contain Alpha-Hydroxy
acids such as glycolic or lactic acid should
be used.
q
Redness
will gradually fade over a several week to
several month period.
SLEEPING
q Rest
on your back to avoid the pillow from rubbing
against your face.
A semi-reclining position will aid in
the reduction of swelling.
BATHING
q
You
may shower or bathe, leaving the tape in place
and keeping
it dry.
q
Leave
the tape in place even if it becomes soiled.
FOOD
q
Drink
only liquids with a straw for 24 hours after
surgery.
q Advance
to soft foods taking small bites for the next
5 days.
q
Continue
cautious eating for 2 weeks following surgery.
HYGIENE
q Brush
teeth normally without stretching the lips;
avoid the use of dental floss.
r
On
the third day following surgery, the tape will
be removed and a special powder will be
applied.
You will receive extra powder and
instructions for the next three days
q
Reapply
powder using a Q-tip to any wet or weeping
areas until a scab is formed.
q
When
a scab is completely formed, you may
discontinue the powder.
Begin applying cold cream (not
Vaseline) to the scab.
Leave the cold cream on for 10 minutes,
then remove whatever material will come off
easily.
q Do
not remove anything that is bleeding or stuck
on.
Follow this regiment twice daily until
the scab is gone.
ACTIVITY
q
Minimize facial expressions
to prevent stretching and cracking of the new
skin.
Minimize talking, rough chewing and
laughing.
q
You
are not a bed patient, but don’t overdo it.
Quiet activities at home are best for
the first few days following surgery.
Avoid sweating if at all possible.
Jogging, aerobics, swimming and other
such activities should be avoided until your
doctor gives you permission.
q Avoid kissing
to reduce the risk of infection or cold sores.
q Avoid
sun exposure for at least 12-15 months
post-operatively.
Do not expose the peeled area until it
whitens.
Wear a sun block at all times.
Makeup containing sunscreen agents is
NOT sufficient!
Tanning of red or pink skin may cause a
permanent change in pigment.
CLOSING
q Wear
clothing that does not pull over the head to
avoid touching the peeled areas with your
clothing.
DRIVING
q
Someone
should drive you to your first postoperative
appointment.
You can drive when you are no longer
taking prescription pain medication and your
doctor gives you permission.
